The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) and Qatar University (QU) celebrated the conclusion of the Teachers Training Programme on Scientific Research Methodology, launched in January by the Qatar University Centre for Young Scientists in cooperation with the MoEHE’s Training and Development Centre.

The programme saw the participation of 17 middle and high schools’ teachers in addition to 347 male and female students. Attended by Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi and QU’s Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies Dr Maryam Al Maadeed, the closing programme ceremony featured a presentation on the Qatar University Centre for Young Scientists and its efforts to develop the Qatari youth’s capabilities and skills in research and critical thinking, in addition to showcasing the contents of the training programme and the experiences of its participants, to conclude by honouring the teachers and students who excelled in the training workshops of the programme.

The programme sought to develop the scientific research skills of the participants and enhance their critical thinking through an intensive training programme designed by the Qatar University Centre for Young Scientists.

In remarks on the occasion, Dr Maadeed praised the efforts made by the QU’s Centre for Young Scientists to implement the programme and also lauded the performance the participants. She emphasised the importance of cooperation between the ministry’s Training and Development Centre with QU’s Centre for Young Scientists in the programme, which succeeded in training and qualifying 17 teachers in the field of scientific research methodology through theoretical and practical training programmes and workshops.

Highlighting the importance of scientific research in the process of development and advancement of nations and peoples, she said reaching high levels of innovation, research and technical and technological progress is one of the most important requirements of society. She pointed out that reaching this advanced stage can only be accomplished by activating the mission of universities in revitalising the scientific research movement at all levels, linking scientific research methodology at all academic levels with development issues and opening channels of cooperation with educational institutions and various development sectors.

For her part, Director of the Training and Educational Development Centre Eman Al Mohannadi appreciated the partnership with Qatar University Young Scientists Centre (QUYSC) whose impact was reflected in the improvement seen in public schools’ teachers and students’ research skills, in line with the human development pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030.

QUYSC Director Dr Noora Jabr Al Thani said through the Teachers Training Programme on Scientific Research Methodology, Qatar University seeks to promote a culture of academic research by establishing a clear curriculum that is especially tailored for every age and educational levels.

She added that the aim of the programme is to educate and train students from an early age on research principles and methodologies, making research mastery a trait to be proud of and to enable students to apply these skills practically in an environment that supports thinking, exploration and creativity. She said QUYSC seeks to ease and improve academic research for students through this programme, which provides real life application and practice in the programme’s workshops.

The final stage, held at MoEHE headquarters, saw qualified schools compete for the middle and high school categories, in which Ahmad Bin Mohammed School for Boys won the first place for the high school category, followed by the Doha Secondary School for Boys in the second place and Zubaida Secondary School for Girls in third. As for preparatory schools, Hind Bint Amr Al Ansaria Preparatory School for Girls came first, while Soukaina Bint Al Hussein Preparatory School for Girls and Moza Bint Mohammed Preparatory School for Girls came second and third, respectively.

At the end of the ceremony, the Minister of Education and Higher Education and QU’s vice-president for Research and Graduate Studies toured the accompanying exhibition of more than 80 research projects.
