Ambassador of Republic of Korea to Qatar HE Lee Joon-ho hosted a special event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Qatar.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Joon-ho said the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Qatar is a momentous occasion that signifies not just decades of collaboration but a profound partnership characterised by mutual respect, shared growth and deep understanding.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar HE Dr Ahmad Hassen Al Hammadi, Director of Protocol Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar HE Ambassador Ibrahim Fakhroo, Dean of Diplomatic Corp and Ambassador of Brunei to Qatar HE Mohamed Bahrin bin Dato Paduka Haji Abu Bakar, ambassadors, dignitaries, guests and members of the Korean community.

Ambassador Joon-ho said, “Fifty years ago, our visionary leaders laid the foundation for a partnership that transcended mere economic exchanges to encompass cultural, educational and intellectual cooperation. This forward-thinking approach has borne fruit, with Korea emerging as a steadfast partner in Qatar’s journey towards economic prosperity and infrastructural modernisation.”

He praised Qatar for its pivotal role as a mediator in regional conflicts, particularly the Israel-Palestine situation, while also looking forward to collaborative initiatives that enhance global stability and conflict resolution.

He said that Qatar’s significance to Korea as a critical supplier of LNG cannot be overstated, with the nation contributing one-fifth of Korea’s natural gas needs and ranking as the sixth-largest petroleum exporter to Korea.

Highlighting Korean companies’ role serving in Qatar, the envoy said, “Our joint ventures serve as tangible manifestations of our robust cooperation, from the establishment of landmarks like the Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel in 1979 to recent monumental projects such as the Lusail Expressway, the National Museum of Qatar and the Doha Metro. Each of these projects reflects the seamless integration of Qatar’s visionary leadership with Korean innovation and excellence.”

He added that the recent state visit by President Yoon Suk-yeol to Qatar in October further solidified the bilateral ties, resulting in the signing of numerous memorandums of understanding across various sectors valued at approximately $4.6 billion.These agreements signify not just contracts but profound commitments to each other’s prosperity, outlining a roadmap for sustained collaboration, he added.

Talking about commemorating of 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both countries, he said, “As we reflect on this historic milestone, it’s imperative to look towards the future. The evolving global landscape presents new challenges that demand innovative solutions. Together, we stand uniquely positioned to address these challenges, driven by a shared spirit of determination and cooperation that has defined our relationship over the past 50 years.

“Let us also cherish and build upon the cultural bridges that deepen our understanding of each other’s heritage and aspirations. Cultural engagement remains as vital as our economic and strategic alliances, underlining our comprehensive approach to diplomacy.”

He added, “Let us ignite new ambitions for the future, reaffirming our commitment to mutual benefit, learning and respect. Our enduring partnership continues to serve as a beacon of international cooperation, showcasing that through unity, perseverance and mutual understanding, extraordinary results can be achieved.

The Korean envoy said both Qatar and Republic of Korea share a special connection through the global celebration of sports.“Just as Korea experienced transformative growth following the 2002 FIFA World Cup, we anticipate Qatar’s post-World Cup flourish, showcasing its rich culture, innovation and leadership on the world stage,” he said.Fifty years ago, our visionary leaders laid the foundation for a partnership that transcended mere economic exchanges to encompass cultural, educational and intellectual cooperation.
