Pakistan International School Qatar (PISQ) organised a lecture-cum-workshop on ‘Mastering Spontaneous Speaking Skills’ recently.
The workshop was conducted by Muhammad Abdur Rehman, a debate education specialist at Qatar Debate.
In the opening session, Rehman spoke on the importance of spontaneous speaking skills as one needs to speak extempore most of the time.
The first prerequisite of spontaneous speaking, he said, is anxiety management. One can manage one’s anxiety by adopting some strategies like overcoming reluctance and taking the situation as an opportunity.
Moreover, focus on present rather than on far reaching outcome reduces anxiety. Some techniques like tongue twisters can help develop focus on the present. Furthermore, for effective spontaneous speaking, one should adopt useful structures like ‘Problem- Solution- Outcome’ or ‘what? So what? Now what’ and ‘Past, Present, Future’ etc.
Rehman concluded that one needs to develop a ‘muscle’ for spontaneous speaking skills through regular practice. The lecture was punctuated with very interesting and interactive activities which kept the audience engaged throughout the sessions. The session provided students with an opportunity to get a broad insight into spontaneous speaking.
Secondary school students from Senior Boys Wing and Senior Girls Wing attended the lecture-cum-workshop. Vice-principals of Senior Boys Wing and Senior Girls Wing accompanied by five faculty members attended the session.
