The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) on Thursday launched the 'Turtle Conservation Campaign' at Fuwairit beach.
The move aims at conserving sea turtles and raising awareness about them.
The campaign included a number of activities such as cleaning up of the Fuwairit beach, organising awareness shows on the turtle project and the need to save sea turtles. Brochures highlighting the importance of sea turtles were also distributed.
The events also included field visits and honouring parties involved in the campaign. The campaign also raised awareness about the endangered Hawksbill sea turtle.
The event was attended by Mohammed al Marri, Head of Environmental Protection, Reserves and Wildlife Department of the MME, a number of participating bodies in the campaigns, and representatives of Al Shamal Municipality in cooperation with Qatar University (QU), Qatar Petroleum, Dulsco Company. A number of students from schools in Al Shamal area took part in the campaign.
The turtle nesting season runs until August 1 in the islands and the northern coasts of the country, especially at Fuwairit beach.
The 2016 season saw active participation of the Environmental Protection, Reserves and Wildlife Department. A total of 31 nests were spotted during the last nesting season.
