MORE than 40 groups took part in a community parade which was the major highlight of the opening ceremony of the three-day celebration of the 119th anniversary of Philippine Independence held at City Centre Rotana Doha on Sunday.
The delegates comprising of professional groups, brotherhood, regional organisations, sports group, among others, proudly paraded in their uniform shirts while waving their banners and small Philippine flags during the activity. Regional group BIMAK (Benguet, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Apayao, Abra Kalinga) led the parade while performing a native dance.
Philippine Ambassador to Qatar HE Alan Timbayan, Philippine Labour Attache to Qatar David Des Dicang and Chairman of United Filipino Organizations in Qatar (UFOQ) Ressie Fos led the Filipino community in the celebration. Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International 2016 Justine Mae 'Jaya' San Jose who arrived from Manila on Monday was also among the special guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Timbayan urged Filipinos to support the initiatives of the Philippine government."I wish to invite Filipinos in Qatar to support our government in its quest to fight corruption and to dispel misinformation. There can be no moving forward for our country and its people if we will perpetuate the culture of entitlement for a select few," he said.
Furthermore, Fos called on his compatriots to remember the principles of the true essence of liberty and be reminded of the sacrifices of those who fought for the freedom of Philippine nation.
The opening ceremony also featured a dance performance of popular Filipino music by HERO Qatar and rendition of Filipino patriotic songs by the Maharlikans Vocal Ensemble Philippines. While students of Philippine School Doha (PSD) and Philippine International School in Qatar (PISQ) and other local talents showcased their dancing and singing prowess of Filipino music. The first day of the celebration wrapped up with energetic performances of various local bands.
Aside from the live entertainment, the trade fair of both food and non-food products attracted visitors to the event. Various meeting were held at the second floor of the venue along with a medical mission.
