THE National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has proposed comprehensive guidelines and their effective and uniform implementation at worksites, irrespective of their sizes and category, in Qatar, for the safety of construction workers.
Reading out the recommendations following a day-long seminar hosted by the NHRC in Doha on Tuesday,Dr Mohammed Saif al Kuwari, a member of NHRC, also stressed upon establishing a technical committee to approve the minimum level of standards for the specialised training centres for workers.
It also recommended establishing a similar technical committee to certify the quality and safety of equipment used at worksites such as scaffolding and cranes, besides making procurement of certification from accredited laboratories mandatory.
The NHRC has also proposed to make available accurate information, data and statistics with regard to accidents and occupational diseases through a website in order to help employers, insurance companies, labour inspectors and occupational health and safety agencies develop strategies to enhance safety in workplaces.
Later, talking to Qatar Tribune, Dr Kuwari said,"Today's seminar aims at bringing together representatives from different agencies such as Ashghal, Ministry of Interior, Qatar Chamber, Supreme Committee of Delivery & Legacy and Qatar Foundation to ask them share their data with the proposed committee so that it could come up with recommendations for enhancing safety of workers."
"Our ultimate aim is to improve the safety standards and regulations particularly in the construction sector by way of improving standards of workers' training in occupational safety, standard of equipment used in construction sites and health standards of workers," Dr Kuwari added.
