REPRESENTATIVES of about 20 Philippine firms and government agencies will be meeting Qatari businessmen to discuss opportunities in various sectors during Philippines President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's three-day state visit to Qatar.
The Philippine trade delegation will include people from food and halal industry, engineering, construction and renewable energy.
Duterte will be arriving in Doha from Bahrain on Friday evening. Among the highlights of his visit is the community gathering to be held at Lusail Sports Arena on Saturday. Doha is the final leg of his Middle East visit which kicked off in Saudi Arabia.
The Philippine trade delegation headed by the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is slated to be received by officials of Qatar Chamber.
The Manila delegation includes representatives of Halal International Chamber of Commerce and Industries of the Philippines, Inc, an accredited certifier of halal products by the Philippine government, state-owned Philippine National Railways and the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority.
According to Qatar Chamber's list, the Philippine trade team includes business groups from the Philippine island of Mindanao including the Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Inc and the Minsu Oil Inc based in Zamboanga Del Sur.
Besides, the delegation will include actor Robin Padilla, former mayor of Tagaytay City Francis Tolentino and Sandra Cam, representing Nazareth Institute of Alonzo.
"As an active member of Filipino business community here in Qatar, I am delighted with the President's visit as this would bolster investments in our country,"said Joseph Timothy Rivera, special adviser to the Director-General for Middle East and Northern Europe of Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).
Meanwhile, preparations for the community event to be attended by at least 6,000 people are already in full swing through the leadership of the Philippine Embassy Doha and the United Filipino Organizations in Qatar (UFOQ).
"We look forward to a smooth community meeting of President Duterte. We are also hoping for a productive state visit of our leader in terms of bilateral and diplomatic relations and investments between the two countries. We also hope that the concerns of overseas Filipinos will be addressed during his visit," said UFOQ Chairman Ressie Fos.
Supporters of Duterte, including the group Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte National Executive Coordinating Council (MRRD NECC) with about 1,200 members, has been printing shirts with statement of support to Duterte administration. According to Ali Belarmino, MRRD NECC member, it is their simple way of welcoming the Filipino leader.
"We are very excited to finally meet our beloved president. Everyone at MRRD is happy to take part in this important event in Qatar," Belarmino added.
