QATARDEBATE, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, recently organised the 3rd Qatar Universities Debate League (QUDL).
Hosted by Georgetown University SFS-Q in Qatar, the debate league featured a total number of 20 participating teams from eight universities.
The participants debated around three motions during the tournament including: 'This house believes that (THBT) social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have the right to curate the news stories that trend on their platforms'; THBT Democracies should limit donations to the election campaigns, of parties or of candidates, to single small donations from individual persons; and 'This house supports strong government intervention to prevent gentrification.'
It is worth mentioning that the 20 of debating teams represented the following universities: Academic Bridge Program, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, College of North Atlantic Qatar, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, Northwestern University Qatar, Qatar University, Texas A&M University in Qatar and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.
QatarDebate in collaboration with the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW) held a public debate between the top four teams of the 3rd Qatar Universities Debate League Tournament. The public debate followed the conclusion of the Qatar University Debate League with participation of the majority of institutions of higher education in Qatar.
The public debate is part of a broader ongoing effort on the part of The National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW) aimed at raising public awareness about the threat of weapons of mass destruction.
As the national debate organisation of Qatar, QatarDebate aims to create opportunities for debate and discussion about topics of national, regional, and global importance. The event was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents and skills of debaters taking on a topic of national interest and relevance.
Brigadier (Air Force) Hassan Saleh al Nesf, NCPW deputy chairman, stated that Qatar, being early aware of the gravity of these lethal weapons, has accelerated its accession to the conventions on the prohibition and disarmament of weapons of mass destruction.
The debate was attended by Brigadier (Air Force) Hassan Saleh al Nesf, Lieutenant Abdul Aziz Hamdan al Ahmed, radiation expert Prof Salwan KJ al Ani, Jamal al Baker and Professor Anatol Lieven among others.
