'The Great Awakening', an art exhibition showcasing the works of the Ecuadorian artist Maria Veronica, began at the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara on Monday.
General Manager of Katara Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti and the Ecuadorian Ambassador to Qatar HE Kabalan Abisaab jointly inaugurated the exhibition at a ceremony attended by a number of diplomats and media representatives.
The exhibition, which comprises 35 pieces of art, is scheduled to run until January 30. It highlights Katara's endeavours to promote fine arts amongst the public by encouraging artists from the region and beyond.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti said:"The Cultural Village Foundation-Katara is presenting the works of the Ecuadorian artist, Maria Veronica, which convey her interpretation of the Gulf region through the medium of fine art."
The ambassador said:"I'm delighted to welcome you tonight to this evening that is embellished by your esteemed presence, where creativity embraces beauty, through the paintings of the Ecuadorian and international artist Mar'eda Ver'f3nica Le'f3n." He also expressed his appreciation and gratitude towards Katara.
The artist has adopted a highly technical style in her pieces that range across paintings, drawings, photographs and video-art. She explained how the vibrant gulf region has been her inspiration for the exhibition. Most of her paintings focus on Arab women in various settings, including an impressive piece on Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
Veronica said:"Arabian culture is a fascinating world of mysticism. Its unique stories and sceneries enrich my creativity towards an art form that is in harmony with the region. The new cities are a contemporary phenomenon, which offers a platform for interaction of different cultures inhabiting them."
Veronica was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador. She has represented Ecuador at the 56th Biennale di Venezia, with the exhibition 'Gold Water: Apocalyptic Black Mirrors' in 2015. In 2007, she presented her work at the 52nd Biennale at the Latin-American Pavilion IILA.
