In a thrilling encounter of the Asian Beach Handball World Championships on Thursday, Qatar shocked Denmark 2-1 via a golden goal at the Karteros Beach Sports Center in Heraklion, Greece, to keep up its progress. Al Annabi had earlier suffered a 0-2 reversal against Norway but they regrouped to bounce back the same day. Nowraddine Denguir Amir stood out in Qatar’s win over Denmark garnering 23 points while Marwan Kakhi Hani added 16 as the two-time worlds bronze winners outplayed the Danes 25-24, 22-23, (12-10) for their fourth win of the tournament. However, in their opening Group 2 match, Qatar went down to Norway 22-23, 26-28. In other matches in Group 2, Iran, the only other Asian team at the championship, beat Portugal 22-24, 19-18, 8-6 while Denmark beat Portugal 25-18, 16-21, 7-6, and Brazil beat Iran 17-12, 15-12. Qatar are currently third in Group 2 with four points while reigning champions Brazil are on top with eight points. Denmark are third with six points. Qatar will take on Asian champions Iran on Friday. Top four teams from each of the groups will advance into the quarter-finals. (TNN)
