Buenos Aires: The doctors and nurses of football great Diego Maradona must stand trial for negligent homicide.
A judge granted the prosecution’s request to open a verbal and public trial process against the defendants, local media reported on Wednesday, citing judicial sources. The trial could begin in late 2023 or early 2024.
The eight accused persons include Maradona’s personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, and his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov. According to the investigators, the medical team placed Maradona in a situation of helplessness and abandoned him to his fate. All of them deny the accusations. If convicted, they face prison sentences of up to 25 years.
Argentinian football legend Maradona died at the age of 60 after a heart attack on November 25, 2020, in a private residence north of Buenos Aires. A few weeks earlier, he had undergone brain surgery.
According to the investigators, massive mistakes had been made during his home hospitalization. (dpa)
