The inaugural edition of Al Raheeb Open Chess Championship, organized by Al Rayyan Sports Club in cooperation with Qatar Chess Federation, concluded within summer activities at Al Rayyan Club with the participation of 120 players in the presence of Yousef Mohammed Al Mutawa, Secretary-General of the Qatar Chess Federation; Ali Salem Afifa, Vice-President of Al Rayyan Club, and Fawaz Al Misifi, Director Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Sports and Youth.
The blitz chess tournament according to the Swiss system of 7 rounds/10 minutes + two seconds saw Algerian player Jamal Ferhi win the men’s title while Indian player Sayed Abdelkader was second. The third place went to Filipino Angelito Alexander while his compatriot Mendoza won the fourth place. The fifth place was achieved by Egyptian Omar Salah.
Irfan Mohamed Ferdous was awarded the best Qatari player award, and Amer Al Hammadi the best Qatari player under-12 years.
In the women’s category, Indian player Pronati Sahni emerged first while Qatari Radwa Al Qasabi was the runners-up, and Indian Gauri Lakshmi third while the best Qatari player was achieved by Lian Al Qasabi.
Yousef Muhammad Al Mutawa, Secretary-General, QCF, expressed his overwhelming happiness with the success of the first edition of the Al Raheeb Championship.
He said, “The first edition of the championship witnessed strong competitions, excitement and fun until the last breath, and all the participants had their main goal to win the first places, and this desire made the results close and the competition raged until the seventh round.”
He added, “The joint cooperation between the Qatar Chess Federation and Al Rayyan Club will continue in the coming years, as it was agreed to hold this tournament annually, stressing that the goal in the next edition is to increase the number of players with the participation of many youth centers and various sports clubs.”
Ali Salem Afifa, Vice-President of Al Rayyan Club, thanked the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Qatar Chess Federation and those in charge of the summer youth activity at Al Rayyan Club for organizing an exemplary tournament that took place over two days.
He said, “Al Raheeb tournament was already on time, with distinguished attendance and participation. We have agreed with the Qatar Chess Federation to develop the tournament further in the coming years and invite youth to participate so that we can see larger numbers in the upcoming tournaments.”
Fawaz Al Misifari, Director of Youth Affairs Department at the Ministry of Sports and Youth, praised the levels presented in the championship.
