Living up to the expectations, Qatar’s padel team clinched gold in style at the GCC Games in Kuwait on Saturday, staying unbeaten throughout.
And in the their final round robin match at Al Yarmouk Sports Club on Saturday, Abdulaziz Al Kuwari and Mohamed Abdullah gave Qatar a 1-0 lead as they eased past Ahmad Mohamed and Abdlaziz Mayouf 6-2, 6-4.
Qatar sealed the gold medal after Mohamed Al Kuwari and Abdullah Al Hijji beat Abdulrahman Alawadhi and Mohamed Abdal 6-3, 6-2. In the third match, Rayan Al Jufairi and Ali Al Sayegh blanked Kuwaiti duo Najeeb Al Awadi and Ali Hayat 6-0, 6-0.
Qatar won all four of their matches to become the first nation to win a gold in padel at the GCC Games.
Hosts Kuwait took silver while the UAE secured bronze medal in the competition.
Qatari player Al Hajji was delighted with the victory.
“Winning the gold medal at the GCC Games is a new achievement for the Qatari padel. The players and those in charge of the team made great efforts to achieve this medal and it has paid off,”
he said.
Qatar’s good run, meanwhile, also continued in handball following a nail-biting 24-23 win over Kuwait.
Qatar took a 16-9 in the first period, but the hosts bounced back in the second.
Al Annabi, on top of the table with six points in the five-team event, will meet Bahrain in their last match on Tuesday.
In women’s 3x3 basketball, Qatar experienced mixed fortunes winning two matches while losing as many games. They are third on the table with four points, behind UAE (8 points) and Bahrain (6 points).
Qatar lost their opening game against Bahrain 8-6 before they bounced back for a 16-12 victory over Oman. In their third match, Qatar suffered a 20-11 defeat to Saudi Arabia before they ended the day with a 12-10 win over Kuwait.
Qatar will face the UAE, hoping for a place in semi-finals and a medal in the event, which will conclude today.
Qatar’s tennis team will meet Kuwait in their second match on Sunday. They had beaten the UAE team 3-0 in their opening encounter.
Qatari athletes will begin their campaign in fencing and karate on Sunday. Qatar’s fencing team is represented by Jaber Al Fadaq, Mohamed Al Hazaa, Mohamed Al Olan, Mishaal Al Qahtani, Khaled Hussein, Abdullah Ismail and Ali Turki.
In karate, Khaled Samir, Abdullah Rashad, Yaman Ashraf and Adham Abdel Nasser are among Qatar’s medal prospects.
