Outstanding student projects that showcased the diversity of innovation at Qatar’s schools were recognised at the Shell NXplorers Awards held at the Qatar Science & Technology Park recently. The initiative, which is a partnership between Qatar Shell, Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar and Qatar Scientific Club, honoured top students, including Qataris, teachers and STEM Ambassadors who created remarkable 70 creative ideas to tackle pressing local and global issues.
The awards aimed to empower Qatar’s youth with interest in STEM subjects to become agents of change and leaders of tomorrow. The 2022 Shell NXplorers competition involved 70 teams from nine schools, of which 10 teams exhibited outstanding performance.
The awards ceremony was attended by members of Qatar’s education community, including Maha Al Rowaili, assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), Richard Tallant, managing director and chairman of Qatar Shell, Eng. Rashid Al Rahimi, executive director of Qatar Scientific Club, and Eng Nayef Al Ibrahim, founding partner and CEO of Ibtechar Digital Solutions.
“I congratulate the Shell NXplorers Award winners. Qatar has a passion for excellence in education and Shell is proud to support Qatar’s drive for innovation and creativity. We greatly admire the student and teachers who have developed award-winning ideas to tackle real-world problems, an inspiration to us all. Shell NXplorers is a strong contribution to our shared goal to develop Qatar’s future talent,” said Maha Al Rowaili.
“It is the ministry`s responsibility to offer students with various opportunities for excellence. It is also imperative to celebrate their successes and keep working on motivating them to excel, particularly in the direction of solving the world`s problems. The partnership with Qatar Shell has provided 20 educators with unique programme material and tools that enrich and enhance STEM provision in nine schools, reaching 400 students. Nxplorers is trying to build awareness, develop knowledge and empower youth, and therefore is very much aligned with the ministry`s vision and strategic plans,” Al Rowaili added.
NXplorers workshops introduced concepts that helped students explore real-world issues related to energy, food security and water security. In addition, the students were empowered with tools used to analyze their chosen topic, explore future scenarios, and brainstorm solutions.
NXplorers encourages students to appreciate the strong partnership between the educational institutions and industry, and links the students with exceptional peer leaders, instructors and industry experts who provide positive role models for STEM.
Shell’s NXplorers programme currently operates in 18 countries and has benefited over 35,000 students. It is mainly focused on addressing issues surrounding food, water and energy.
