Qatar’s Mubarak Shannan and Rashed Nawaf had to settle for silver after they lost their doubles tennis final at the GCC Games in Kuwait on Thursday.
In the gold medal match at the Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah International Tennis Complex, Shannan and Nawaf went down to Saudi Arabia’s Ammar Alhogbani and Saud Alhogbani 5-7, 4-6.
Nawaf had faced a heartbreak earlier in the singles too after he lost to Saud Alhogbani in the bronze medal match 4-6, 1-6.
In table tennis Qatar won a bronze after Ahmad Al Mohannadi and Mohamed Hussein beat Bahrain’s Rashed Rashed and Sayed Ali Mahfoodh 11-4, 11-8, 12-10.
The handball team, meanwhile, won their second successive match after they defeated the UAE 29-21.
They had beaten Saudi Arabia 33-20 in their opening match on Wednesday. They play Kuwait next in their next match of the round-robin event on Friday.
In padel, Qatar blanked Saudi Arabia 3-0 at the Yourmouk Sports Club.
In the first match, Mohamed Abdulla and Abdulaziz Al Kuwari swept past Abdulrahman Alazzam and Sattam Alshahrani 6-0, 6-1. Mohamed Al Kuwari and Abdulla Al Hijji also eased past Hassan Al Abdullah and Musaeed Alazzam 6-0, 6-1.
The tie was sealed for Qatar after Jabor Al Mutawa and Mohamed Al Khanji beat Omar Al Thagib and Fahad Al Saad 6-4, 6-2.
After two consecutive victories, Qatar will take on the UAE on Friday.
With five days remaining at the GCC Games, Qatar are fourth in the medals table having won 44 medals (12 gold, 19 silver and 13 bronze). Hosts Kuwait lead the table, followed by Bahrain and the UAE.
On Friday, Qatar will look to seal a gold medal in volleyball as they take on the UAE in their final match in the round-robin contest.
Al Annabi are strong contenders to win the title after their record run in the event that saw them defeating Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain without dropping a single set.
