Kiev Russian forces have seized the town of Svitlodarsk in Ukraine’s contested Donetsk region on its eastern border with Russia, according to both Ukrainian and Russian sources.
The town’s capture has been confirmed by the head of the local Ukrainian military administration, Serhiy Hoshko, following reports on Ukrainian media citing pro-Russian separatists in the region, who said Ukrainian forces had withdrawn for fear of being encircled.
Ukraine’s largest coal-fired power station lies near the town. The separatists also say that an operation to seize Lyman, a town in northern Donetsk, is underway. The Ukrainian general staff has confirmed that Russian troops supported by artillery are moving in on the town. (dpa)
