Kampala More than 5,000 people have fled from the Democratic Republic of Congo to neighbouring Uganda in recent days, amid fighting in the country’s north-east.
A spokesperson for the UN refugee agency UNHCR told dpa on Tuesday that the refugees had been taken to a transition camp in Nyakabande. In the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the M23 rebel movement has been attacking civilians and military installations since the end of March and engaging in gunbattles with the Congolese army. According to UNHCR, 24,879 people have been registered in the camp in Nyakabande since then. Since the beginning of the year, a total of more than 50,000 refugees from Congo and South Sudan have arrived in the landlocked East African country with a population of around 44 million. Uganda is already hosting more than 1.5 million refugees. (dpa)
