Universiti Kebangssan Malaysia (UKM), also known as The National University of Malaysia, will open its first campus outside Malaysia in Qatar.
UKM’s Qatar campus will start classes for its first batch of students in October. To begin with, it will have the faculties of Business Management, Information Technology and Biology.
This information was shared by Ambassador of Malaysia to Qatar HE Zamshari Shaharan. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of Education Malaysia Fair titled ‘My Inspiration’. The fair was held at JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha Hotel.
The Malaysian envoy said that bilateral cooperation with Qatar in the education sector is expected to expand significantly with the recent visit of Malaysian Minister of Higher Education. During the visit she had very fruitful discussions with her Qatari counterpart, Undersecretary of Higher Education of Qatar, and also with the President of Qatar University.
Senior representatives of two universities of Malaysia were part of the visiting minister’s delegation, said the ambassador.
The two universities signed agreements during the visit.
One memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed between UKM and Regional Group Company Qatar. The MoA was signed in the presence of Minister of Higher Education of Malaysia HE Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad. UKM vice chancellor Prof Datuk Mohd Ekhwan Toriman and Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chief Executive Officer of Regional Group Company Qatar, signed the documents.
Ambassador Shaharan said the other deal was signed by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Qatar University. This MoU relates to collaboration on an aquaculture research programme on giant freshwater prawn and sea prawn farming using aquaponics and water recycling systems in desert areas.
