Berlin: Several people have been injured across Germany after a powerful storm and tornadoes hit the country on Friday evening. In the city of Paderborn, 43 people were injured, Mayor Michael Dreier said on Saturday. Thirteen of them were seriously injured and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries.
She underwent surgery in a hospital in Bielefeld, some 50 kilometres away. “She is somewhat better, but her life is still in danger,” senior police officer Ulrich Ettler said.
The German weather service confirmed on Saturday that three tornadoes hit parts of North Rhine Westphalia. According to its report, tornadoes were registered in Paderborn, Lippstadt and Lütmarsen. According to the state’s interior minister, Herbert Reul, more than 7,500 firefighters and aid workers had “given their all across the state in the past 48 hours to prevent anything worse from happening.” (dpa)
