Jordan’s King Abdullah II issued a royal decree on Thursday restricting the communications, residency and movements of his half-brother Prince Hamzah, the royal court said in a statement.
“I have decided to approve a recommendation of the council formed under the Royal Family Law, to restrict Prince Hamzah’s contacts, residence and movements,” said the decree which was published by the state-run Petra news agency.
It added that the council had made the recommendation on December 23 but the king had waited before approving it in order to give Hamzah an opportunity to review his behaviour and “return to the path of self-reflection.” The latest step marks a further deterioration in their relationship.
Last month, Prince Hamzah announced that he was renouncing his title, saying that his beliefs and the values passed on by his father were impossible to reconcile with the “current approaches, policies and methods of our institutions.”
Hamzah’s surprise announcement came exactly one year after 21 arrests were made over an alleged plot against the king, which Hamzah was said to have been at the centre of.
According to reports, the brothers fought openly over the matter.
Prince Hamzah was initially placed under house arrest but then publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to Abdullah by apologizing in a letter and admitting wrongdoing.
Hamzah was his half-brother’s heir until 2004, when King Abdullah II stripped him of the title crown prince, before bestowing it to his own son in 2009.
