A Qatari delegation from the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) and Qatar Postal Services Company (Qatar Post) is in Berne, Switzerland, for the annual meeting of the board of the Universal Postal Unions (UPU) Council of Administration (CA).
The State of Qatar is represented at the meeting as a board member of the CA, which has 41 member countries.
The meeting includes discussions about various Committees under the CA, as well as other related issues, because it ensures the continuity of the UPU’s work between the Universal Postal Congresses, which convene every four years, supervises its activities, and studies regulatory, administrative, legislative, and legal issues. The CA may also take whatever steps it deems necessary to address urgent issues.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the delegation presided over a meeting of the CA’s Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance Committee on Thursday. The agenda for the meeting included discussions about various Committee issues as well as presentations about various topics, such as the UPU Global Development Cooperation Strategy for 2022-2025. The Committee considers and implements decisions made by the Universal Postal Congress concerning technical cooperation among member countries.
The State of Qatar contributes to the betterment of the global postal sector through these meetings, which has a direct impact on the development of the postal sector in Qatar and other local sectors associated with postal services.
It is worth noting that the State of Qatar won a seat on the UPUs CA board last year, as well as co-chair of the Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance Committee with the Republic of Belarus, as a result of elections held at the conclusion of the 27th Universal Postal Congress in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The UPU is a specialised agency of the United Nations and one of the world’s oldest international organisations. The UPU, which has 192 member countries, is the primary forum for cooperation among postal sector players; Qatar has been a member of the UPU since 1969.
