Jakarta: At least 18 gold miners were killed and 10 seriously injured early Wednesday when a truck they were travelling in overturned in Indonesia’s West Papua province, officials said.
The truck was carrying 29 people on a mountain road in Menyambouw district when it skidded and tipped over at about 2 am (1500 GMT), said Monce Brury of the local search and rescue agency.
The police chief in Manokwari, the provincial capital, said 18 people were confirmed dead and six of the injured were in critical condition.
A police officer told local media that failed brakes might have caused the accident. One of those killed was a child, the officer told Metro TV. (dpa)
