Rome (dpa) - Victims of sexual abuse in the Italian church have called for a reckoning with the problem in their country, using the hashtag “#ItalyChurchToo.” Various groups have set up a coordination office for this purpose, which was presented to the public on Tuesday. Together with victims, the initiators are seeking to break the institutional silence on abuse.
Many abuse studies have been encouraged or carried out in other countries. But in Italy, “the church and secular institutions have never initiated a nationwide investigation to shed light on a criminal phenomenon that was widespread across the peninsula,” journalist Ludovica Eugenio said in a statement issued by the initiative.
Most recently, a report on sexual abuse in the Munich archdiocese was met with outrage. As well as detailing hundreds of cases of alleged abuse, it also accused Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI of misconduct. (dpa)
