Coach Luis Castro’s fears came true as title contenders Al Duhail were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Sailiya in Round 15 of the QNB Stars League clash at the Qatar SC Stadium on Monday.
Al Sailiya captain Magdi Abdalla Musa struck a stunning stoppage time equaliser much to the shock of the rivals.
It was a much-needed result for Al Sailiya as they showed a spirited fight to share points with Al Duhail, who are currently on top of the QSL standings with 33 points.
Al Duhail controlled the match with more ball possession and went ahead with a goal by Michael Olunga from a close range following captain Almoez Ali’s cross in the 56th minute.
Al Sailiya pressed for an equaliser and eventually succeeded in it in second minute of stoppage time when Magdi netted the ball from 10 yards outside the box, sealing a
coveted point for Al Sailiya, who now have six points from 15 games.
Al Wakrah bt Ahli 3-1
Meanwhile, at Al Ahli Stadium, Al Wakrah defeated Al Ahli 3-1 to jump to third spot in the standings with 25 points from 14 games, surpassing Al Gharafa (23 points).
Al Wakrah led the proceedings against the home side, with Khalid Muneer taking them ahead with a goal in 43rd minute. Mohamed Benyettou doubled the advantage in 57th minute while Gelson Dala struck at the one-hour mark to make the score 3-0. Al Ahli reduced the lead through Jose Angel, who scored in 73rd minute.
Al Ahli are eighth on the table with 16 points from 15 matches.
Qatar SC edge Al Arabi 2-1
Qatar SC defeated Al Arabi 2-1 at their home ground, with Sebastian Soria (second minute) and Anthony Okpotu (83rd minute) being the scorers. Substitute Valentin Adama (90+5 minutes) pulled one back for Al Arabi.
Qatar SC took their tally to 16 points from 14 matches after their fourth victory.
Al Arabi remained on 23 points from 15 games following their sixth defeat.
Al Sadd to play
Al Shamal today
Reigning champions Al Sadd will return to action after a Covid-forced break as they take on Al Shamal in their Round 15 clash at the Al Gharafa Stadium on Tuesday.
After their Round 11 tie against Al Wakrah was postponed, The Wolves requested postponement of their games against Qatar SC (Round 13) and Al Rayyan (Round 14) following positive cases in their squad.
The Javi Gracia-coached side is currently placed second in the point standings with 31 points.
“We are looking forward to the next game because we’ve not played for a long time,” Gracia said ahead of Al Shamal tie.
Speaking about the difficulties faced by the team in the current period due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the coach said: “I think these times are hard for everybody – for players, for the club, and as well for many people outside. As the rest of the people, we try to be fit and to recover as soon as possible. All the players were unavailable but now we are focused on the next game.”
“We know we have now many games to play but I think the spirit of the players is high and they are well-motivated. I’m sure we’ll do really well.”
Al Sadd had beaten Al Shamal 7-2 in the first leg.
In other matches today, Al Khor will host Al Rayyan while Umm Salal will visit Al Gharafa Stadium to take on the home side.
