Doha International Book Fair is a great opportunity to promote the culture of reading and move towards knowledge and science, Minister of Culture HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al-Thani has said.
The minister said, in statements on the sidelines of the opening of the exhibition, that this edition, despite being held in exceptional circumstances due to the pandemic, is the largest so far in its history, with the participation of 430 exhibitors from 37 countries distributed over 845 pavilions. He pointed out that the exhibition, which is in its 50th year after its beginning in 1972, represents the cultural leadership of Qatar, and a continuation of its giving in the dissemination of culture and knowledge.
He pointed out that the exhibition pavilions were designed in a unique creative way, as this edition witnessed a distinguished participation of Qatari publishing houses. The Ministry of Culture was keen to support and exempt them from the estimated financial cost of renting the pavilions, and from the cost of services provided by the exhibition halls, he said. The minister said the expo is distinguished with the participation of a number of ministries, especially the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry Endowments, the Ministry of Municipality, and other institutions such as Qatar University, Qatar Museums, Qatar National Library, Al Jasra Cultural Center and others.
The United States of America is the guest of honour for the exhibition on the occasion of Qatar-America Year of Culture 2021. This allows visitors to discover different aspects of American culture and American intellectual production.
Regarding the American participation, Charge d’Affairs at the Embassy of the US HE Natalie Baker said her country’s participation comes on the occasion of the Qatar-America Year of Culture 2021, coinciding with the two countries’ celebration of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations.
She added that the US Embassy pavilion at the exhibition contains about 7,000 books offered for sale at discounted prices, including more than 750 titles of various groups from children’s books to best-selling books in the world.
Ambassador of Italy to Qatar HE Alessandro Prunas, expressed, in a statement to QNA, his country’s happiness to participate in the event, pointing out that given Italy’s first institutional participation, the choice was made to bet on younger generations, as Italy and Qatar attaches great importance to the education and promotion of the potential and rights of children.
