COVID-19 booster dose enhances immunity and those who take it may not need hospital care or admission, according to Ministry of Public Health (MoPH).
In response to a question about the COVID-19 vaccine booster dose, MoPH Head of Vaccination Dr Soha Al Bayat said, “Recent scientific studies have shown that the third or booster dose further enhances your immunity and can provide you with up to 75 protections from mild to moderate disease. All of the recent unfortunate deaths did not receive any of the vaccine doses. And the vast majority of those in the ICU have either not received their vaccines at all or have only received the first and second doses. All of this shows the importance of taking the third booster dose to further protect you, at the very least, from a severe infection.”
Concerning the need for a booster dose for people who have already received two doses, Dr. Al Bayat stated that scientific evidence has shown that the immunity obtained from the first and second doses of the COVID vaccines begins to wane after six months. “So this is why it’s absolutely critical that people take their booster dose to further enhance and reactivate their immune system to increase the level of immunity that they have.”
According to her, even if a person has received a booster dose, they can still become infected, though the symptoms may be mild. “Taking the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will give you protection from mild to moderate infection. So yes you may still get the infection but you may not need hospital care or hospital admission.”
Dr. Al Bayat also said that anyone 12 years of age or older who has been at least six months since receiving their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is now eligible to receive the third booster dose of the vaccine.
Talking about the any side effects related to the booster dose, Dr Al Bayat said, “So far more than 365,000doses of the COVID-19 booster have been given in the State of Qatar. Only a minor number of people have reported mild to moderate symptoms post the vaccine like pain in the arm at the site of the injection, headaches, body aches and some people had some fever. But the majority had only very mild symptoms and they did and they did not require any medical care.”
