Spectator capacity at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne next week will be capped at 50 per cent due to rising coronavirus infections.
“Ticket sales will be paused at 50 per cent of capacity - where a session has not already sold to that level,” Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews said in a statement Thursday.
All tickets purchased to date will remain valid, and no tickets will be cancelled or changed. There will be no changes to ground pass access, the statement added.
In line with its “COVIDSafe Event Plan,” face masks will be mandatory for all patrons, except when eating or drinking, and the event will align with Victoria’s other statewide COVID-19 regulations.
This includes a density limit of one person per two square metres for all indoor hospitality.
The Melbourne newspaper The Age reported that no more than half of tickets have been sold yet for any match in the tournament. The Australian Open, one of the country’s premier sporting events, is due to start on Monday.
