Vilnius Almost 100 Iraqis were flown to Iraq from the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius over the weekend, the Lithuanian Interior Ministry announced on Monday. The flight to Baghdad and to Erbil in northern Iraq carried 98 Iraqis who had entered the country illegally from neighbouring Belarus, the ministry said, adding that this had been the first charter flight of its kind. The ministry emphasized that the repatriation had proceeded with the consent of the Iraqis aboard the flight. Speaking to local media, Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite referred to a “historic event,” and Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis thanked the European Union and Iraq for their contributions during the refugee crisis in Belarus. (Agencies)
