Indian socio-cultural organisation Sanskriti honoured award-winning expatriate writer Sheela Tommy at a function in Doha recently.
Sheela was feted at the event for her debut novel ‘Valli’ (Earth, wine and wages) with a reputed literary award in memory of Cherukad Govinda Pisharodi, a cultural activist and writer from the south Indian state of Kerala.
Sheela is the first writer in Qatar to receive this award.
Her lyrical novel deals with the issues of environment, liberal politics, ecology and feminism depicting the transformations of an ecologically sensitive forest village in Wayanad -- a hilly province in Kerala.
President of the Sanskriti forum Ahmed Kutty, general secretary Jalil AK and former president Chandran feted the writer on the occasion.
Other members of the forum present on the occasion shared their reading experiences of the novel making it a worthwhile event for literary enthusiasts.
An audio presentation of ‘Valli’ was another attraction of the event.
Sheela thanked Sanskriti for its appreciation.
She said she is working on her new novel.
