China sent 27 aircraft into Taiwan’s air defence zone on Sunday, the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defence said.
The Chinese aircraft, which entered Taiwan’s south-western Air Defence Identification Zone during the daytime, included 18 fighter jets (J-10, J-11 and J-16), five H-6 bombers, two KJ-500 aircraft, a Y-9 aircraft and a Y-20 Aerial Refueling.
The Taiwan Air Force had issued radio warnings and its air defence missile systems were activated to monitor the activity, the ministry said.
It’s the biggest daytime flyby of Chinese warplanes since October 4, when a record 52 aircraft were detected in Taiwan’s air defence zone.
The Chinese sorties came after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen received five members of the US House of Representatives on Friday as well as the Sunday arrival of 10 parliamentarians from Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the democratic island part of its territory and opposes any form of official contacts between Taiwan and other countries.
