The Corniche Street will be closed from Friday (November 26) until Saturday (December 4) to host the fans of FIFA Arab Cup attending the events accompanying the tournament.
“The Corniche Street will be closed, starting from Friday, November 26 to Saturday, December 4 to host the fans of FIFA Arab Cup attending the events accompanying the tournament. Please use alternative ways to reach your destinations. Stay safe!” the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said in a tweet.
First Lieutenant Engineer Khaled Nasser Al Mulla, Head of the Technical Committee of the Corniche Closure Committee at the Ministry of Interior, has confirmed that a complete plan has been drawn up in preparation for the 2022 FIFA Arab Cup, which will start next Tuesday and the Corniche will be closed until December 4.
In a press statement, Al Mulla said, “With the combined efforts of the Security Committee and the Corniche Closure Committee, which is subordinate to the Committee for Transportation and Transport Plans and Operations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, a complete plan has been drawn up for the closure, starting with engineering work through connecting traffic signals to each other, providing roads with more than 110 directional panels, and more than 49 electronic panels on the roads, as well as more than 7 construction works on separate intersections on the roads to improve movement and flow during the closure of the Corniche.”
He added, “We have allocated entrances and exits for pedestrians at 11 pedestrian crossings through the Corniche, and the sea side will be completely for pedestrians.”
Al Mulla confirmed that during the Corniche closure two events will be held: fireworks during the weekend at 8 pm which will last for 5 minutes, and the food festival, which will start at 3pm. The festival will run from November 26 to December 4, but the Al Bida Park Festival will be held from November 26 to December 17.
He said the Corniche will open from December 5 with the festival continuing in Al Bidda Park.
He said a traffic plan has been organised, as there will be a spread on all lines and intersections not to disrupt the roads.
On the access roads to the Corniche, he stressed that the Corniche is a major artery, but there is another underground artery, the “metro”, which includes 37 stations throughout the country, and 14 of them have a “park and move” service by parking the car next to the station and riding the metro with ease, to reach various metro stations are on the Corniche, and therefore the metro is the perfect solution during the closure period.
He said, “We also have the second ring road and the third ring bus service, where the second ring service starts from Souq Waqif and has 15 pick-up and drop-off points. As for the third ring service, it will also start from Souq Waqif and will include 19 pick-up and drop-off points. Using the metro will have many benefits, including following a healthy lifestyle, as well as easy access, saving money and effort, and therefore the metro will be the best solution during the closure period.
