Paris: In the wake of Sudan’s military coup, France is questioning its pledged multibillion-dollar debt relief for the African country. France has supported the democratic transition process in Sudan since the beginning of 2019, a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Paris said on Friday evening. Debt relief had been part of that process, he said. It was clear that the military coup of October 25 was now calling this process into question. To support the democratic transition, international donors had wanted to relieve Sudan of billions of dollars in debt. After an aid conference in May, France had announced a cancellation of the entire bilateral debt of about 5 billion dollars. France has the highest share of Sudan’s debt in the so-called Paris Club. In this informal body, important creditor states seek solutions to debt crises.
