Buenos Aires: Two people were killed in clashes between police and indigenous activists in southern Chile on Wednesday, Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado confirmed. Police and armed forces patrols came under fire from demonstrators near the town of Tirua in Arauco province, Delgado said. The officers then returned fire. A state of emergency is currently in effect in the area due to a recent wave of violence. According to media reports, the fatalities were two men from the indigenous Mapuche people. “They are killing the Mapuche people, there are many dead and injured,” Francisca Linconao, the indigenous delegate to the Constituent Assembly said, according to a Radio Cooperativa report. She said indigenous people have had enough. Southern Chile has seen repeated arson attacks on houses and vehicles. Radical groups from the Mapuche indigenous people, who have been fighting for the return of their lands for decades, are believed to be behind the attacks. (DPA)
