Qatar Tourism on Monday launched its new initiative billed World Class Chefs with a showcase of signature dishes of Michelin-Star Chef Julien Roucheteau at Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Msheireb Downtown on Monday.
Qatar Tourism Chairman and Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive HE Akbar Al Baker graced the occasion marking the start of the two-year programme aimed at hosting high-profile chefs from around the world and put the spotlight on the thriving culinary industry in the region.
Commenting on the new initiative, Baker said, “We are opening up the approach for the Michelin-Star chefs to come and start promoting the food festival at the same time, opening up opportunities for Michelin-Star chefs to come and open restaurants in Doha, to work in hotels and upgrade the food offering that we have been always doing in Qatar.”
Michelin-Star Chef Roucheteau from France was the first guest chef in the initiative organised by Qatar Tourism in collaboration with Qatar Airways, Qatar Aircraft Catering Company (QACC) and Kings of Kitchen.
During the event, he wowed the guests with his refreshing concoctions which provided a sneak peek into the top level culinary expertise to expect from the exciting initiative.
According to Berthold Trenkel, COO of Qatar Tourism, the programme aims to take to the next level the concept of bringing famous chefs to Qatar by hosting culinary talents on a regular basis from different parts of the world.
He said since they started lining-up chefs to feature in the programme, there has been a growing interest from top chefs from across the globe, including the biggest names in the culinary industry, to come to Doha and be part of the initiative.
He said, “We started to line up these chefs and we will bring someone every week or two weeks. First, this will help all of us because new chefs and new food will come here and I hope the locals will like it. Then, we bring more chefs into the food festival that will happen in Doha from November 25.
“Beyond that, I think there is a business opportunity because we have so many new hotels that are under construction and all of them need chefs. Some will hire local, existing talents but I think there’s nothing wrong bringing a few more names and maybe we can even get some of those chefs to move to Qatar, as in move the whole business and become famous here, and grow our industry.”
He said the programme will also see Qatari chefs partnering with international chefs, adding that the programme is likely to go beyond the FIFA World Cup as they intend to grow the initiative with an aim of making Qatar a hub for foodies from across the world.
