Colombia’s most wanted drug lord and head of the Clan Del Golfo, Dario Antonio Usuga David, alias Otoniel, could face extradition to the United States following his arrest in Colombia on Saturday.
“An extradition request has been made for ‘Otoniel,’ and the Ministry of Justice is treating him accordingly,” Colombian Defence Minister Diego Molano said in an interview to the El Tiempo newspaper on Sunday.
According to Colombian President Ivan Duque, the 50-year-old cartel boss was captured by a combined force comprising the army, air force and police on Saturday morning in the Uraba region of the state of Antioquia in Colombia’s north-west.
According to El Tiempo, Usuga David suffers from kidney problems for which he requires medication. This clue was reportedly key in tracking him down.
“Calm down, soldier, I am the person you are looking for,” were his first words when he was discovered, according to the magazine Semana.
Usuga David stands accused of various crimes including drug trafficking, murder, extortion, kidnapping and conspiracy. He was indicted by the Southern District of New York on drug trafficking charges and is on the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s most wanted list. Duque confirmed there was an extradition warrant in his name.
The US Department of State had been offering a reward of up to 5 million dollars for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction.
The Clan Del Golfo, formerly called Los Urabenos and Clan Usuga, is a paramilitary group comprised of former members of terrorist organizations that did not demobilize as part of the Colombian government’s peace process.
