Pigeon Engineering Projects, Trading and General Services (Pigeon Engineering) has emerged as one of the most prominent companies in Qatar’s construction sector under the leadership of its CEO Rajendra Kumar Sharma.
Sharma’s success story in Qatar is truly inspirational, one that marks him out as a pacesetter.
Hailing from Baglung District of Nepal, where people are still struggling to fulfill their basic needs, Sharma dreamt big and worked hard to realise it. Hard work paid for Sharma, who is now known as Nepalese Business Tycoon in Qatar’s construction market.
Inspired by his father’s work as an entrepreneur, Sharma always wanted to become a successful entrepreneur.
However, his success was not achieved overnight. It all started seventeen years ago when Sharma was running a travel agency in Delhi, India. He arrived in Qatar in search of his debtors who owed him a large sum of money from his travel agency business. He couldn’t find his debtors in Qatar. However, during the journey, he made some good friends and partners.
His first business was Manakamana Restaurant in Doha. Despite his best effort the restaurant couldn’t perform well and was shut down. At that time, he realised there was a vast difference between his imagination and the reality of doing business abroad.
They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Sharma embarked on his next venture in the construction sector. He established Al Maymoon Trading and Services in 2004. Al Maymoon Trading was converted to Pigeon Engineering Projects in 2009. It is now a name to be beckoned within the country’s Project Support, MEP Contract and Construction, Oil & Gas, Petro-Chemical, as well as the Civil & Electro-Mechanical Projects sector.
Utilising its capacities to the hilt, the company offers an enormous range of products and caters to all the requirements of the construction industry, from villas to high rises and all kinds of oil & gas, petro-field projects.
With strategic business links and technical partnerships with leading system suppliers from Germany, Italy and other countries, Pigeon Engineering possesses the wherewithal, technical know-how and infrastructure capability to execute any challenging and time-bound projects.
The company was awarded excellence in workers’ welfare by the Supreme Committee of Delivery and Legacy, the government entity responsible for delivering the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It is one of very few companies in Doha that covers its employees under free life insurance as well as the workmen compensation policies.
Due to its atmosphere, employees’ retention at Pigeon is very high with more than 50 percent of its employees having more than seven years of experience. As part of the company’s vision for expansion, it has also recently established its branch in Nepal.
The company currently has more than 1,500 employees under its payroll, the majority of which are from South Asian countries.
According to Sharma, Qatar provided him with the platform to expose his strengths and desires to succeed in business.
Besides business, he is always in the front line to stand up for social works whereby he has helped numerous people in Qatar who needed help, mainly the people of Nepalese origin.
He also serves as Secretary of Non-Resident Nepalese Association (NRNA) ICC and vice president of Nepal Business Association Qatar.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sharma led the campaign of transporting 570 oxygen cylinders in Nepal with the co-operation of NRNA. Another example of his philanthropy is that he is responsible for payment of the school fee, uniforms, food and others for the orphan children community in Chitwan, Nepal.
He also supports an elderly home run by the Social Welfare Council Nepal in Pashupati. Every year Sharma visits the remote areas of Nepal and distributes the basic things for needy people like food, warm clothes, blankets, cooking utensils and other items. He is actively involved in every social works being done by the NRNA and Nepal Business Association Qatar.
