CAPE TOWN: South Africa has started vaccinating children age 12 and up against Covid-19, the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to do so. At least 3.25 million girls and boys are to be vaccinated by January 2022, half of all children in this age group, according to an announcement by the Health Ministry. The young people are initially to receive just one dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. Throughout the nation, some 11 million people have been fully vaccinated, of a population of nearly 60 million. South Africa has recorded some 3 million cases of Covid-19, making it the country worst affected in Africa. Throughout Africa, some 8.4 million cases have been recorded, according to the pan-African health organisation Africa CDC, and more than 216,000 deaths.
