Cape TOWN The Ethiopian army carried out air strikes on civilians in Tigray’s capital Mekelle on Monday, according to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
At least three people died and dozens were injured in the bombings, Kindeya Geberehiwot, a member of the TPLF’s central committee, said. “The ‘Air Force’ sent its bomber jet to attack civilian targets in& outside #Mekelle. Monday is market day in #Mekelle & the intention is all too palpable,” TPLF spokesperson Getachew Reda tweeted. The Planet Hotel, where more than a dozen humanitarian organizations had housed staff until recently, was another target, he said. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government did not comment on the airstrikes, but also accused the TPLF on Monday of killing at least 30 civilians using heavy artillery. (DPA)
