Jakarta: Eleven junior high school students drowned while trying to cross a river during a scouting outing in Indonesia’s West Java province, an official said on Saturday.
The students were trekking along a river in Ciamis district as part of extra-curricular activity when the accident happened on Friday, district chief Herdiat Sunarya said.
The pupils between the ages of 12 and 15 were apparently dragged by a strong current as they were crossing the river, he said.  “Search teams found all of the victims downstream,” the district chief said. Several teachers were seriously injured while trying to rescue their students.
The outing involved 150 students from the Harapan Baru Islamic high school, local media reported. (dpa)
