Beirut: The death toll from an Israeli airstrike in central Syria has risen to nine people, a war monitor reported on Thursday.
Nine pro-Iran militiamen were killed in the overnight bombardment that targeted several Iranian positions in the province of Homs near the T4 airbase east of Palmyra, the Syrian Obervatory for Human Rights added.
Earlier, the Britain-based observatory, which monitors violence in war-torn Syria, said at least four pro-Iran militiamen were killed and seven others injured in the reported Israeli attack. The watchdog said all the dead were Syrian nationals operating for Iranian militias and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement.
Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that a Syrian soldier was killed and three others wounded in an Israeli airstrike.
Syrian state TV and SANA said that shortly after midnight, Israeli jets hit the eastern countryside of Homs, targeting a communications tower and other facilities in the vicinity.
“We are not commenting on reports in foreign media,” an Israeli military spokesman told dpa.
Last week, a similar attack in Homs injured six soldiers, according to Syrian state media. (dpa)
