Denmark qualified for next year’s World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday as they maintained their 100 per cent record with a 1-0 victory over Austria.
Joakim Maehle netted the winner in the 53rd minute in Copenhagen as Denmark made it eight wins out of eight qualifiers. They are also yet to concede in those 720 minutes of play, with a goal difference of 27-0.
The Euro 2020 semi-finalists join Germany, who clinched their berth Monday, and directly entered hosts Qatar, with two games to spare for what will be their sixth World Cup finals.
Austria goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann made crucial first-half saves against Andreas Skov Olsen and Mikkel Damsgaard while Martin Hinteregger headed over the bar on the other end.
But Bachmann was beaten in the 53nd when Thomas Delaney ran across the edge of the penalty area and fed Atalanta’s Maehle for a low shot to break the deadlock.
Austria fought but never really threatened and in fourth seven points behind second-placed Scotland can no longer qualify for the play-offs via the group. But they are in the running for one of two spots awarded via Nations League results.
Before kick-off, captain Simon Kjaer and the Danish team received an award from the International Fair Play Committee for their behaviour four months ago on the day when team-mate Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland.
Kjaer accepted the Special World Fair Play Trophy from the International Fair Play Committee ahead of the World Cup qualifier.
“We are of course happy to win a prize that is given for the fact that our team stands together and helps each other,” said Kjaer, according to a statement message from the Danish Football Association.
“That day we showed who we are and what values the team is based on,” Simon Kjaer said. “I, as the leader, am proud of that.”
Eriksen collapsed on the pitch in Copenhagen during a European Championship group game against Finland on on June 12 and had to be resuscitated.
Kjaer and his teammates received a lot of praise for their reaction, including because they shielded their teammate after his collapse.
