Jakarta: Landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rain have killed four people and injured five others in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province, officials said Thursday.
More than 300 homes and 80 hectares of agricultural land were submerged by floodwaters up to two metres high in Padang Pariaman district on Wednesday, said National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari. Storms also toppled at least 12 homes and damaged shops in the area, he said. Rescue workers were still evacuat ing affected locals to safer locations on Thursday amid continuing downpours, said Andi Putra, a local government official.
“We are using traditional equipment such as hoes and carts to remove debris because there’s no heavy machinery,” he said. Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season. (dpa)
