Qatar University’s (QU) College of Dental medicine inaugurated a newly-established Dental Simulation Laboratory in the presence of QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham, Vice-President for Health and Medical Sciences Dr Asma Al Thani, Vice-President for Administration and Financial Affairs Dr Khaled Al Khater, Vice-President for Academic Affairs Office Dr Omar Al Ansari and Dean of the College of Dentistry Dr Mandeep Dougal.
The president, vice-presidents and a number of faculty members and heads of departments toured the newly established College of Dental medicine, including the modern pre-clinical laboratory, with the aim of spreading awareness about the college and its facilities/laboratories and to show students the support provided by the university.
The lab aims to educate male and female students about the basics of clinical dentistry before they embark on clinical practice on real patients. This will also facilitate their smooth transition from theoretical learning to clinical application by practising and improving their techniques within the safety and security standards of the lab where they will have the opportunity to practise their dental skills using simulations and equipment they will use in real life when they treat patients.
The lab provides a highly technologically advanced environment that is digital so that the students can be trained in digital dentistry - the future of dental health care.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Dougal said, “Three years ago, dental education was a dream and today, it has become a reality in t Qatar. The College of Dentistry will provide the country’s future-ready dental practitioners to meet the oral health needs of the population.”
The College of Dentistry is the first national college of dentistry in Qatar, which has already enrolled 70 male and female first-year students - 62 percent of whom are Qataris, 22 second-year students – 50 percent of whom are Qataris, and 15 third-year students, comprising 53 percent Qataris.
The curriculum is based on a six-year horizontal and vertically integrated programme, including field training where planning accreditation follows scheme accreditation from the Australian Dental Council upon graduation of the first batch.
