Riga Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has denied bearing any responsibility for the death on Sunday of an 11-year-old who had been living in a migrant shelter in Lithuania, having crossed the border from Belarus two months ago.
At a meeting border guards in the Belarusian capital Minsk on Monday, Lukashenko pointed the finger at his European neighbours, whose actions had, he said, aggravated the “very unfavourable situation” on the border by taking a confrontational approach to Belarus.
The governments of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia have all declared states of emergency on their border with Belarus due to the surge of illegal migrants in the past few months. (dpa)
