New York Shortly before he was set to be extradited, former Nazi death squad interpreter Helmut Oberlander has died in Canada at the age of 97, local media reported on Thursday.
Oberlander, who died at home on Monday, had last lived in the province of Ontario and most recently worked as a real estate developer, according to media reports, citing his family.
A Supreme Court of Canada ruling in 2019 cleared the last hurdle for Ottawa to strip Oberlander of Canadian citizenship.
His lawyers, who had previously successfully fought three attempts to strip Oberlander of his citizenship, argued that Oberlander was 17 when he was conscripted to serve in a mobile killing squad.
Oberlander was born in Ukraine in 1924 and became a German citizen during World War II, according to court documents. He came to Canada in 1954 and obtained Canadian citizenship in 1960. (dpa)
