Amsterdam The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently reviewing a request for approval from vaccine manufacturers Pfizer and BionTech for a booster shot of their coronavirus vaccine, the regulator said on Thursday.
People above the age of 16 could receive the booster jab six months after being fully vaccinated against the virus.
After evaluating the data submitted by the manufacturers, the EMA plans to announce its decision in early October.
Several countries are already offering a third BioNTech/Pfizer shot, mainly to people with particularly weak immune systems.
According to the EMA, the companies have not yet applied for approval for the use of their coronavirus vaccine in children under 12, but the agency is expecting first data on the 5-11 age group to be submitted for review at the beginning of October. (dpa)
