Istanbul: Several university students in Turkey have been camping in city parks to protest what they call extraordinary rent hikes in neighbourhoods near their campuses, drawing the government’s ire for their troubles.
As millions of college students return to in-person education, apartment rents in Turkish urban centres have drastically increased, as many as 60% in some regions.
Student vigils in parks across the country - including in its largest city, Istanbul, and the capital, Ankara - have drawn social media attention since the weekend. Some opposition mayors and locals have offered help. The government, however, sees the protests as “provocation,” Deputy Interior Minister Mehmet Ersoy tweeted on Wednesday, accusing protesters of spreading “lies.” (dpa)
