Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has stressed that the failure of the international community to help the Afghan people will result in social unrest eventually leading to a civil war.
In an interview with “Fox News”, the FM said Qatar supports Afghan refugees and provides them healthcare, including vaccines for the coronavirus.
“We have been helping and supporting refugees who have been transiting through Qatar,” the FM said.
“Since the Taliban movement took control of Kabul, the largest evacuation operation in history has taken place. More than 60,000 evacuees have passed through Doha, and the Taliban have pledged that Afghans who have the appropriate documents will be able to leave the country,” the FM said.
He added that the Taliban’s announcement of new appointments in the government to include people of different ethnicity and those not affiliated with the movement is a small positive step.
The FM expressed his hope that the Taliban would fulfil their obligations, noting that the movement needs to show that it is moderate and that it has changed. “If this does not happen, we believe that stability will not be permanent, and we may be in a very worrying situation soon,” he added.
The FM also affimed that there is a common desire on the part of all the GCC partners since the Al-Ula agreement to restore cooperation.
In another interview to CNN, the FM said, “It’s unacceptable for us to see any mistreatment of women in Afghanistan. Qatar shows a Muslim country can progress with active participation of women and there is nothing in our religion preventing them from going to school.”
