The Indian Sports Centre (ISC), which functions under the aegis of the Embassy of India, kicked off its 7’s Football Tournament with thrilling opening matches at CNA-Q grounds. The opening ceremony and kick-off matches were attended by players and organisers following strict COVID-19 protocols of the ministry.
The opening ceremony was inaugurated by ISC President Dr Mohan Thomas. In his speech, Dr Thomas said the ISC’s goals include raising awareness of sports including football, among the Indian expatriate community. He assured that the ISC will provide a platform for all expatriate communities to come together and create bonding attached to sports.
He also underlined the strong support of the ISC and the Indian community to Qatar for hosing events such as the FIFA Arab Cup 2021 and FIFA World Cup 2022. He said the ISC, along with the community, has planned elaborate programmes for the FIFA events, including community outreach programmes and cultural events.
The 1st league matches of the ISC 7’s Football Tournament 2021 were attended by 32 teams from eight groups.
Two teams from each group will proceed to the next round of knock-out stage. All major known local teams such as City Exchange FC, Ali International FC, KEF, Friday FC, Kreston Milano FC, etc. were among the 16 teams that reached the quarter-finals. The tournament will run until early October. The finals and the closing ceremony of the tournament will be announced soon.
The Title Sponsor of the event is City Exchange with other supporting sponsors being ABN Corporation, Lloyd Airconditioners, HP Lubricants, Care n Cure group, Imalco, Galaxy Automotives, Premier Indecor, Tradewest Trading, Apex Events, Chemmanur Jewellers, Twenty – One, Safa Water and 89.6 Mirchi One.
