Qatar’s industrial production in July rose 1.2 percent from June mostly due to a jump in the mining output, which includes oil and gas production.
According to the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA), the key Industrial Production Index stood at 100.3 points in July, down 6.3 percent from a year ago.
The mining component of the index, which has a relative weightage of 83.6 percent, showed an increase of 1.2 percent month-on-month and a decline of 6.7 percent year-on-year.
The m-o-m climb in mining output was driven by increased production of crude oil and natural gas, by 1.2 percent. However, production under the “other mining and quarrying” group showed a month-on-month decline of 5.2 percent.
Qatar’s manufacturing output — which has a relative weightage of 15.2 percent in the index — edged up in July, showing a 0.8-percent rise from June. PSA attributed this to fall in the manufacture of refined petroleum products by 12.3 percent and chemicals and chemical products by 1 percent. However, manufacturing output in six groups went down — printing and reproduction of recorded media by 17.8 percent, cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 8.7 percent, food products by 6.5 percent, basic metals by 6.1 percent, rubber and plastics products by 3.7 percent and beverages by 3.1 percent.
The manufacturing component of the IPI in July showed a 4.1-percent decline when compared with that in the same month last year.
The fall was driven mainly by decreased productions of beverages by 15.9 percent, refined petroleum products by 10.2 percent, food products by 6.7 percent and chemicals and chemical products by 5 percent. However, manufacturing output went up in three groups year-on-year — cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 11.6 percent, rubber and plastics products by 9 percent and basic metals by 3.4 percent.
Electricity output — which accounts for 0.7 percent of IPI — increased 16 percent in July month-on-month and fell 5.7 percent year-on-year. Similarly, water production (desalination), which carries a weightage of 0.5 percent, showed an increase of 2.4 percent month-on-month and a fall of 20.8 percent year-on-year.
